John Allan, IDFA vice president of regulatory affairs and international standards, was elected to serve as vice chair of the U.S. National Committee of the International Dairy Federation (IDF) during the group’s spring meeting last week. Cary Frye, IDFA senior vice president of regulatory affairs, ended her term as U.S. IDF chair, but will continue her leadership in IDF as a member of its board of directors. Previous vice chair Shawna Morris, vice president of trade policy at the National Milk Producers Federation, became the new U.S. IDF chair.

U.S. IDF is one of 45 national committees representing countries that work together to provide scientific expertise for the dairy sector worldwide. As vice chair of U.S. IDF, Allan will aid in the committee’s efforts to protect and enhance the U.S. dairy industry in the global dairy sector. He will also aid in IDF’s efforts to provide science-based information to foreign governments and international organizations such as the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which develops food standards used in many countries.

“I’m honored to assume this role and work on strengthening the impact that U.S. IDF has at the international level,” Allan said. “I hope to increase engagement and participation of American dairy industry experts at both the U.S. IDF and IDF levels and drive greater coordination across the U.S. industry on Codex standard-setting work.”

He will continue his leadership on the international level as chair of IDF’s Standing Committee on Standards of Identity and Labeling, a position he’s held since last fall. After four years of service as vice chair, Allan will become chair of U.S. IDF.
