Welcome to October, which is shaping up to be a busy month! The month starts with the biggest event in nutrition and dietetics: the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ (formerly the American Dietetic Association)
Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE).
This year, FNCE is being held October 6-9 in Philadelphia. I enjoy attending to hear the latest on nutrition research and public health initiatives, but I also find the conference helpful for gauging the general nutrition environment.
According to the
agenda, some of the “hot topics” will be: the role of industry in food and nutrition, food additives, social media and healthy food for children. Some of the sessions I’m tentatively planning to attend include a session on nutrition labeling changes with Dr. Barbara Schneeman of the Food and Drug Administration, an analysis of government and industry cooperation related to MyPlate and an update on the new school meals in action. Take a look at the
agenda and let me know what other topics you'd like to hear about.
FNCE’s Expo floor showcases new products and new ingredients. In past years, I’ve seen many IDFA member companies displaying healthy dairy products to the attendees, who make up the largest gathering of nutrition professionals in the world.
Later this month, the second annual
Food Day will be taking place on October 24. The event is spearheaded by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and aims to raise awareness of food-related issues, similar to the way Earth Day raises awareness of environmental issues.
This year’s Food Day continues with the goal of promoting food that is “healthy, sustainable, affordable and fair.” Last year, the celebration of Food Day included a number of events across the country, including community meals, farmers markets, movie screenings and panel presentations. A variety of events are already planned for this year’s Food Day, including a marquee event in Washington, D.C., that will predict what the food environment will look like in 2050. Last year’s events got some media coverage, so you may see some news stories, or get some customer questions about this year’s Food Day.
And don’t forget about
IDFA's webinar series on Dairy Product Labeling being held October 23, 24 and 25. Cary Frye, IDFA vice president of regulatory and scientific affairs, and I will be covering nutrition labeling, nutrient content and health claims, and also labeling hot topics.
Will you be attending FNCE or participating in Food Day events? Let me know if you’ll be in Philadelphia this weekend—I’ll love to say hello!
