The nation celebrated National Peanut Butter Day last week with creamy and chunky spreads in everything from sandwiches to milkshakes. Did you know that the dairy industry indirectly supports the manufacturing of peanut butter? Dairy companies, distributors and retailers support American nut and peanut butter manufacturers in a number of ways.

Nearly 150 jobs in the roasted nut and peanut butter manufacturing industry depend on spending by the dairy industry or dairy industry employees. This includes about 33 manufacturing jobs that are making nuts and peanut butter used in dairy products, like in rocky road ice cream. These jobs are the result of purchases directly paid for by dairy companies.

Dairy employees and supplier employees also support nearly 115 additional jobs for nut and peanut manufacturing workers when they buy peanut butter and other roasted nuts at local stores, farmers markets or food co-ops for personal use.

All told, the dairy industry creates $8.84 million in wages and over $94.83 million in economic impact for American peanut butter producers and nut roasters.
