March is National Nutrition Month, and this year the campaign focuses on the importance of making commonsense food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. It coincides perfectly with the start of spring – a time for new beginnings with a whole world of activities at our fingertips. IDFA, as an associate member of the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF), encourages member companies to use the Foundation's healthy habits messages with your employees and customers to help them make healthy changes. Make a commitment with your family to focus on nutritious eating and regular exercise this month. Family mealtime is the perfect opportunity to teach and demonstrate active, healthy living to your children. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends children and teens get at least 60 minutes or more of physical activity a day; adults should strive for two and a half hours or more each week. Family activities can be a great way to contribute to this daily exercise plan. Make sure your schools are using Energy Balance 101 curriculum, which the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation developed with Discovery Education. It has great resources for teachers and nurses to use to bring the themes of National Nutrition Month into the classroom. When our children are learning the importance of nutritious eating and regular exercise both at home and at school, they are more likely to form lifelong healthy habits.
