Stephen M. Ostroff, M.D., former deputy commissioner for foods and veterinary medicine at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), will address dairy leaders attending IDFA’s Regulatory RoundUP, June 4-5, 2019, in Arlington, Virginia.

Dairy companies seeking to create new products in response to changing consumer expectations face roadblocks due to outdated federal standards and other restrictions that limit the industry’s ability to innovate and compete in today’s highly competitive marketplace. In a session titled “Navigating Regulations for Novel Foods and Technologies,” Ostroff will draw on his years of experience and leadership at FDA and  provide updates on reforms the agency is undertaking and the challenges it faces in doing so. He will also offer advice on how to maximize innovation while minimizing roadblocks in today’s regulatory environment.

“Our regulatory team had the opportunity to work with Dr. Ostroff on a number of key issues during his tenure at FDA. These included obtaining regulatory discretion for the use of ultra-filtered milk as a cheese ingredient, as well as launching a pilot program to improve efficiency of Food Safety Modernization Act inspections at dairy processing facilities,” said Cary Frye, IDFA senior vice president of regulatory affairs. “Now that Dr. Ostroff is in the private sector, we will be pleased to hear remarks from a different perspective from this esteemed leader at Regulatory RoundUP.”
