Most first birthday parties feature cake, usually smeared all over the birthday boy's or girl’s face. But the first birthday party for MyPlate is more likely to feature fruits, vegetables, low-fat and fat-free dairy and whole grains, along with healthy activity.
MyPlate was released by First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on June 2, 2011. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is celebrating and encouraging others to celebrate with a variety of
new resources featuring active party planning ideas and healthy party recipes, many including dairy products.
The First Lady has also announced the “
Healthy Lunchtime Challenge.” This recipe contest encourages kids ages 8 to 12 to develop a lunchtime recipe that incorporates all of the foods recommended by MyPlate, including low-fat and fat-free dairy products. Winners will be invited to a Kids’ State Dinner in August, where some of the entries will be served. The contest closes June 17.
