President Barack Obama signed into law the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act, or “FAST Act,” last Friday. The five-year reauthorization provides increased funding for highways and transit and makes changes and reforms to many federal transportation programs.

While an amendment to increase truck weights on the National Interstate Highway system failed to make it into the new law, a technical provision was included to allow vehicles carrying fluid milk products to apply for overweight vehicle permits. IDFA was one of several dairy organizations supporting the provision, which will make it easier to move milk efficiently from farms to plants across state lines.
