IDFA chairman Paul Kruse, who is CEO and president of Blue Bell Creameries in Brenham, Texas, will testify this Tuesday before the U.S. House agriculture subcommittee responsible for dairy. The informational hearing will focus on the economic conditions currently facing the U.S. dairy industry.
Representative David Scott (D-GA) is the chairman of the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry, which is holding the hearing. He also was a featured speaker at IDFA's recent Washington Conference, where he indicated an interest in learning more about the industry and hearing from processors about dairy demand and prospects for future growth.
"While IDFA recognizes the problems the producers are facing on their farms, we want to make sure that any new policies or programs being considered won't interfere with market dynamics or make it harder to innovate and grow demand," said Ruth Saunders, IDFA vice president of policy and legislative affairs. "We believe that product innovations and increased global demand are fundamental parts of any solution designed to address the problem of over supply."
IDFA is helping to develop the testimony for Kruse, whose company has facilities in Scott's home district. Another committee member, Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), represents the 19th district in Kruse's home state.
Others who are scheduled to testify include representatives from the National Milk Producers Federation, Select Milk Producers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Western United Dairymen.
