    Dairy, Ag Groups Urge President Trump to Act Immediately to Halt Canada’s Continued Disregard of Trade Obligations

    The U.S. dairy sector and state agriculture officials today urged President Donald Trump to take immediate action against Canada’s repeated and escalating disregard for its trade obligations under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Most recently, Canada implemented a new national pricing policy that blatantly blocks American dairy exports and will enable significant dumping of Canadian dairy products onto the world market. As a result, dozens of dairy farmers in the Midwest recently learned they must find new customers for their milk by May 1, which will cause considerable economic hardship and possibly force them to go out of business.

    Canada’s Dairy Trade Actions Hurting Rural America, U.S. Dairy Groups Urge Federal and State Governments to Retaliate

    U.S. dairy organizations today urged the Trump Administration to fight back against protectionist Canadian trade policies that are slamming the door to American dairy exports in violation of existing trade commitments between the two nations. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC) and the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) called on the federal government, and on governors in northern states, to take immediate action in response to Canada’s violation of its trade commitments to the United States.

    IDFA President and CEO Urges Congress to Address Risk Management for Milk Processors and Farmers in Testimony before House Agriculture Committee

    Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA), testified today before the House Committee on Agriculture about dairy policy and its impact on potential provisions in the 2018 Farm Bill. Dykes said that IDFA’s top priority is to enhance demand for U.S. dairy products—both at home and in the global market.

    Sweet Me Strawberry Rhubarb Cobbler Ice Cream, Honey Roasted Peanut Butter Ice Cream and Cool Mint Sandwiches were named the most innovative ice cream products at the International Dairy Foods Association's annual Ice Cream Technology Conference this month in Henderson, Nev. The Innovative Ice Cream Flavor Competition, which showcases the creativity of U.S. ice cream makers and flavorings suppliers, captured several upcoming flavor trends in the ice cream and frozen dessert industry.

    U.S. Dairy Leaders Promise Steadfast Commitment to Mexico

    During a trip to Mexico this week, the leaders of U.S. dairy organizations promised to continue a strong commitment to their partnership with Mexico’s dairy industry and consumers. Michael Dykes, D.V.M., IDFA president and CEO, today joined Tom Vilsack, president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council, and Jim Mulhern, president and CEO of the National Milk Producers Federation, at the Femeleche conference, which brought together Mexican dairy industry leaders, farmers and government officials. The U.S. leaders also met with the Mexican Minister of Agriculture and the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.

    Darci Vetter, Former USTR Chief Ag Negotiator, Urges Food Companies to Get Seats at the U.S. Trade Table

    In her keynote address at the International Sweetener Colloquium this week, Ambassador Darci Vetter, former chief agricultural negotiator for the U.S. Trade Representative, urged food and beverage companies that use sugar and sweeteners in their products and sugar providers to demand a seat at the table on trade negotiations in the new administration. The annual event, co-sponsored by the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the Sweetener Users Association (SUA), drew more than 500 people from 10 countries.

    Dairy, Ag Groups Urge President Trump to Raise New Canadian Milk Pricing Scheme Issue in Meeting with Prime Minister Trudeau

    The U.S. dairy sector is urging President Donald Trump to discuss Canada’s protectionist milk pricing policy during Monday’s meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF), the U.S. Dairy Export Council (USDEC), the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) are calling the issue “one of the most sensitive and urgent topics complicating the relationship between the two countries.” The White House will host Trudeau in Washington today to discuss matters related to trade policy and the renegotiation of NAFTA, among other issues.

    IDFA Launches Summer Intern Program to Offer Experience in Dairy Policy and Politics

    IDFA is launching a summer internship program this year to offer one undergraduate student a first-hand view of the association’s efforts on dairy policy with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and federal officials in regulatory agencies. The selected candidate will work in IDFA’s office in Washington, D.C., to participate in the organization’s efforts to build relationships with the new administration and new Congress, as well as efforts on the upcoming farm bill, the school lunch program, trade policy, the Nutrition Facts label and GMO disclosure standard.

    IDFA Recognizes Cornell University Dairy Foods Extension Team for Food Safety Leadership

    The Cornell University Dairy Foods Extension team received the International Dairy Foods Association’s inaugural Food Safety Leadership Award at Dairy Forum 2017 last week in Orlando, Fla. The award honors an individual, group or organization for demonstrating outstanding leadership directed at enhancing food safety within the dairy products industry. The team was selected for its comprehensive and innovative approaches to support and improve food safety across the dairy industry, as well as its drive to share cutting-edge research conducted by its world-renowned scientists with the global dairy industry.

    Kathleen Glass, Associate Director, Food Research Institute, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Named 2017 National Cheese Institute Laureate

    The National Cheese Institute bestowed its highest honor, the NCI Laureate Award, on Kathleen Glass, Ph. D., a senior scientist and associate director at the Food Research Institute of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. NCI Chairman Ron Dunford, who is president, Schreiber US, Schreiber Foods, Inc., presented the award to Glass this week at Dairy Forum. “Her research focuses on improving food safety by eliminating or controlling the growth of pathogenic bacteria,” said Dunford. “The findings of her work have influenced changes to the Pasteurized Milk Ordinance and are used by product developers and food safety professionals in the cheese and broader dairy industries.”

    U.S. Dairy Companies Push Back Against Canada’s Protectionist Policies

    The U.S. dairy industry this week continued to push back against Canada’s protectionist policies that are effectively blocking American dairy imports into the country in violation of international agreements. A group of 17 dairy companies representing dairy farmers and processors from coast to coast asked governors in 25 states to urge Canadian policymakers to uphold existing trade commitments with the United States and halt the imminent implementation of a national strategy that would unfairly subsidize Canadian dairy products in its domestic and global markets.

    IDFA is now accepting applications for the 13th annual Dairy Industry Safety Recognition Awards, a program that honors facilities and trucking operations for outstanding worker safety performance. “We are pleased that we now are able to recognize IDFA members that have implemented proactive safety programs to prevent illness and injuries from occurring in the workplace and that have outstanding safety statistics to verify the programs are working,” said Emily Lyons, IDFA director of regulatory affairs and counsel.
