Dairy products are a source of nine essential nutrients in the American diet, and cheese is no exception, says Michelle Matto, IDFA’s nutrition and labeling consultant, in her new blog post. Although the Dietary Guidelines recommend that Americans switch to reduced-fat dairy options in lieu of cheese to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease, an emerging body of science is challenging that recommendation. Matto said a number of studies over the past few years found no connection between intake of full-fat dairy and heart disease. In fact, some studies indicate that certain full-fat dairy products may even protect against these conditions.
