    ‘Dairy Delivers,’ IDFA’s Economic Impact Tool, Looks at New Mexico

    The dairy products industry in New Mexico employs nearly 6,000 skilled individuals, generates more than $215 million in direct wages and has an overall economic impact of $5.32 billion. The state’s dairy companies ranked 27th among the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in contributions to the U.S. gross domestic product in 2017, according to IDFA’s economic impact tool, Dairy Delivers.

    Latest IDFA Membership Briefings Available Online

    Members who missed the most recent membership briefings on Feb. 28 may now log in to access recorded updates provided by IDFA’s subject matter experts. IDFA members are invited to participate in these briefings three times a year to hear a deeper dive on issues of importance to the dairy industry. The next membership briefing will be held June 21 at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time, and will include updates for all IDFA members and constituent organizations.

    Trump Enters NAFTA Conversation with Tweets about US Farmers

    Following the release last week of the administration’s plans to impose tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, President Donald Trump took to Twitter this week to say tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports could be eliminated if the countries would sign a “fair” North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). His tweets coincided with the 7th round of NAFTA negotiations in Mexico City, which ended on Monday without significant progress. The Washington Post on Monday provided an analysis of the tweets and included a statement from Michael Dykes, D.V.M., IDFA president and CEO.

    IDFA Analyzes New FDA Guidance on Nutrition Facts, RACCs

    The Food and Drug Administration published five new guidance documents last week that provide additional information on the updated Nutrition Facts label and Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACCs). The documents provide clarifications for dairy products companies that are preparing to comply with the updated nutrition labeling requirements by the January 1, 2020, deadline.

    Donald Grady Joins IDFA’s Legislative Team

    IDFA this week welcomed Donald Grady to its legislative affairs team. In his new position, Grady will advocate for IDFA’s legislative policies and objectives with policymakers and other stakeholders, as well as assist with developing IDFA’s legislative goals and strategies. He comes to IDFA from the office of U.S. Representative Jim Costa (D-Calif.) where Grady served as a legislative assistant. Before that, he was a legislative correspondent for U.S. Representative Jim Marshall (D-Ga.).

    IDFA, Others Call for Continued US Leadership on IP Issues

    IDFA and nine other food and agriculture organizations last week sent a letter welcoming Andrei Iancu as the new director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). They also asked him to maintain critical department roles and functions to help address inappropriate geographical indications (GIs) and other intellectual property rights concerns.

    USDA, HHS to Welcome More Stakeholder Comments on Dietary Guidelines

    Officials in the Departments of Agriculture and of Health and Human Services last week announced they will accept more public and stakeholder comments in the development process for the 2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. For the first time, the departments will seek comments on the proposed priority topics and related scientific questions that the advisory committee will consider when making recommendations for the new edition, a move the officials said will help ensure transparency in the process.

    IDFA, NMPF Oppose Tennessee Bills on Raw Milk and Raw Milk Butter

    IDFA and the National Milk Producers Federation last week sent four letters urging Tennessee state lawmakers to oppose proposed legislation that would loosen restrictions on the sale of raw milk butter to consumers in the state. They also opposed legislation that would exempt certain homemade foods and beverages, including raw milk, from existing requirements for food branding, labeling and inspection.

    Proper taste-testing techniques are critical skills ice cream companies use to ensure that their products are top quality. A featured session at IDFA’s Ice Cream Technology Conference, April 10-11 in Fort Myers, Florida, will explore methods used by industry professionals and academia to effectively analyze and evaluate the flavor, texture and appearance of ice cream. The session, “A Sensory Analysis of Ice Cream,” will also cover the scoring methods and language used to give meaningful understanding to ice cream characteristics. The session will lead directly into the conference’s Innovative Ice Cream Flavor Competition, where attendees will evaluate the industry’s latest flavor creations.

    To recognize companies with outstanding worker safety programs and results, IDFA encourages member companies to nominate their processing and trucking operations for the 14th annual Dairy Industry Safety Recognition Awards. “The quality of nominations we receive each year is a testament to the dairy industry’s effort to actively improve workplace safety in innovative ways,” said Dave Crowley, senior environmental health and safety director for HP Hood LLC, and chair of IDFA’s Environmental Worker Safety Committee. “I encourage all dairy companies to submit nominations and continue to demonstrate our industry’s deeply-rooted commitments.”

    What can the dairy industry do to help shape its future? Focus on consumers, innovation and changing markets, said Michael Dykes, D.V.M., IDFA president and CEO, in his recent column for Cheese Market News. “We’re living in a culture of choice, and our diverse industry is well positioned to meet it,” he said, adding that consumers want experiences and solutions, as well as products, for a healthy and mobile lifestyle. To take advantage of changing markets, the United States must have a leadership role in facilitating world trade. “A proactive trade policy is essential to help lead us into the future,” he said.

    IDFA Supports Engaging in New Asia-Pacific Trade Talks

    IDFA voiced support last week for the United States to enter the new TPP trade negotiations following President Donald Trump’s recent comments about re-engaging in the trade talks to obtain a better agreement for the United States. Also last week, 26 Republican senators urged the president to enter negotiations on the agreement, which could provide U.S. dairy companies with more access to several growing markets in the Asia-Pacific region.
