    Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party Draws Great Crowds, Thanks to Member Donations

    Members of Congress and their staffs poured out of the Capitol Building and surrounding offices yesterday for the “coolest” party on the Hill. IDFA's 36th annual Capitol Hill Ice Cream Party served nearly 1,500 gallons of ice cream and thousands of root beer floats this year in Union Square Park, where long lines of eager partygoers spanned across the direct view of the capitol dome. IDFA would like to thank the 21 Ice Cream Party sponsors for their generous donations, which helped to make the event a great success.

    FDA Deputy Commissioner Commends Dairy Industry for Consistent Collaboration

    Stephen Ostroff, M.D., deputy commissioner of food and veterinary medicine for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), made his third appearance as the keynote speaker for IDFA’s Regulatory RoundUP on Tuesday. He praised IDFA and the dairy company professionals in attendance for consistently partnering with FDA to protect public health and provide quality products. He also shared several updates on FDA’s progress on regulations that affect dairy companies. “Thank you to everybody in this room. The relationship is a strong one and it's only getting stronger. We have great lines of communication with many of you in this room, particularly with IDFA,” Ostroff said.

    Ice Cream Leaders Hit Capitol Hill, Call for Funds to Improve Sustainability, Innovation

    Members of IDFA’s International Ice Cream Association (IICA) board of directors arrived in Washington, D.C., this week to meet with congressional leaders and advocate for the industry’s biggest policy priorities. The leaders stressed the need for Congress to pass an agricultural appropriations bill that includes funds for research on ways to reduce ice cream waste and resources to help ensure federal regulations keep up with industry innovation and food safety needs.

    Mexico Targets US Cheese in Trade Dispute

    Mexico announced on Tuesday that it will impose tariffs of 15 to 25 percent on U.S. cheese exports, in addition to other agriculture and steel products sent to the country. Mexico imposed the tariffs in response to the Trump Administration’s announcement that it will end the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariff exemptions for the European Union, Mexico and Canada. Under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), all U.S. dairy products enjoyed duty-free access into the Mexican market. Mexico is a top market for U.S. cheeses accounting for $391 million in sales in 2017.

    Mexico, Canada Propose Tariffs on US Dairy Products

    The Trump Administration earlier today announced that it will end the Section 232 steel and aluminum tariff exemptions for the European Union (EU), Mexico and Canada. Effective tomorrow, June 1, steel imported into the United States will be subject to a 25 percent tariff and aluminum imports will face a 10 percent tariff. The EU, Mexico and Canada have announced plans to impose retaliatory trade measures affecting certain U.S. products. The initial Mexican list of proposed retaliatory tariffs includes cheese, although a list of specific tariff codes has not yet been issued. Likewise, Canada also announced that it will impose retaliatory tariffs on $16.6 billion in imported U.S. products, including a 10 percent surtax on yogurt, pizza and quiche.

    Kraft Heinz and IDFA: Combatting World Hunger One Meal at a Time

    IDFA joined a recent Kraft Heinz effort to eliminate hunger in vulnerable populations around the world by participating in a Rise Against Hunger meal packaging event in Washington, D.C. The IDFA team, led by Michael Dykes, D.V.M., IDFA president and CEO, this month joined the company’s staff and a dozen members of Congress to measure, pack and ship 20,000 meals bound for schools in Mozambique. “IDFA is very fortunate to have members that look beyond their own communities to fight hunger on a global scale,” Dykes said.

    Raise a Glass: June 1 is World Milk Day

    IDFA is joining dairy lovers around the world tomorrow in celebrating the 18th annual World Milk Day with a “cheers!” to milk, drawing greater attention to dairy’s positive role in healthy diets and the economy. The Global Dairy Platform is leading the World Milk Day celebration this year, and has chosen dairy’s economic contributions as one of its central themes. Members are encouraged to use Dairy Delivers℠, IDFA’s economic impact tool, to find data on their states and communities to share. Dairy companies with social media accounts can join IDFA in posting these facts in #WorldMilkDay messages to be featured on WorldMilkDay.org.

    USDA to Purchase $20 Million of Cheddar Cheese

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last week announced it will purchase $20 million of cheddar cheese to be provided to families through the agency’s nutrition assistance programs. USDA said it will make the purchase to encourage domestic cheese consumption. USDA also said it will use a new, streamlined process to make these purchases, which will involve proactively monitoring market conditions and providing a more predictable and consistent process for determining when it will make purchases.

    IDFA Intern Program to Provide Benefit for IDFA and Student

    Rori Henderson, a junior at Cornell University, will join the IDFA team as an intern in the Legislative Affairs Department. For the next three months, Henderson will assist IDFA’s legislative team with special projects, research and events. “As our summer intern, Rori will work closely with legislative staff to become familiar with the association’s efforts to shape policy, focusing on key dairy trade policy issues related to North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiations, bilateral trade pacts and geographical indications,” said Beth Hughes, IDFA director of international affairs.

    Failed Farm Bill Doesn’t Dampen IDFA Successes

    The farm bill failed on the floor of the House of Representatives last week by a vote of 198-213. Despite the failure of the bill, IDFA was successful in achieving a couple of positive results during the amendment process, including the addition of an amendment that would finalize a rule allowing low-fat flavored milk to be served in school cafeterias, as well as the defeat of an amendment which would have allowed raw milk to be shipped across state lines in certain circumstances.

    Trade Update: New Developments with China, Tariffs and NAFTA

    Many trade policy developments that are important to dairy happened during this past weekend, according to Beth Hughes, IDFA director of international affairs. In her recent trade update, Hughes gives IDFA members the latest news on a “ceasefire” on trade threats between the United States and China, updates on possible exemptions for the U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs, and negotiations on the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

    EPA Proposes Positive Changes to Risk Management Program

    The Environmental Protection Agency last week proposed several positive changes to its Risk Management Program, which regulates the dairy industry’s use of chemicals in refrigeration systems and wastewater treatment. “We are pleased to see that EPA has reconsidered the Risk Management Program by rescinding and modifying sections of the rules to give more flexibility to regulated facilities in complying with these provisions. In addition, the new proposal provides additional time with revised compliance dates,” said Cary Frye, IDFA senior vice president of regulatory affairs.

    FDA Extends Compliance Date for Foods with PHOs Already in Markets

    The Food and Drug Administration is requiring companies to remove partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) from food and beverage products in the United States by June 18, 2018. The agency last week clarified that products containing PHOs that are already shipped and in stores before the June compliance date can be sold through January 1, 2020. IDFA and other stakeholders had urged FDA to clarify that these products would not need to be removed from shelves next month, helping to avoid severe disruption and confusion in the marketplace.

    Two IDFA Members Receive US Dairy Sustainability Awards

    The Kroger Co. and the Tillamook County Creamery Association each received U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards this month for their outstanding efforts to implement programs that delivered significant benefits to their communities and their companies. Kroger received its award for outstanding dairy processing and manufacturing sustainability, and Tillamook earned the award for outstanding community impact. The U.S. Dairy Sustainability Awards, sponsored by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, were launched in 2011 to recognize outstanding dairy farms, businesses and partnerships for socially responsible, economically viable and environmentally sound practices. Michael Dykes, D.V.M., president and CEO of IDFA, served on the panel of judges, which included experts from academic institutions, government, dairy science, business and trade media, and environmental and dairy industry leaders.

    FDA Expands Data Dashboard to Include FSMA Requirements

    The Food and Drug Administration launched a new section of its Data Dashboard to help importers and processors meet supply-chain requirements under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). The new section makes it easier to find compliance and enforcement information related to specific firms. IDFA encourages members to review the Dashboard because three of the FSMA rules contain supply-chain requirements: the Foreign Supplier Verification Programs rule, the Preventive Controls for Human Food rule and the Preventive Controls for Animal Food rule.
