    US to Continue Active Role In WIPO, Fight for IP Rights

    American companies rely on the leadership of the United States in the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to protect and enforce U.S. intellectual property (IP) rights abroad, but the U.S. government risked losing its seat at the table until last week. In response to a letter spearheaded by IDFA and signed by 19 other trade associations, the U.S. State Department last week released 85 percent of its dues to WIPO, ensuring that the U.S. government can continue its role in the organization that protects and enforces American IP rights abroad. For dairy, U.S. representation in WIPO is critical to help prevent other countries from using geographical indications to restrict the use of common cheese names.

    China Lowers Tariffs on US Cheese

    The Chinese government last week announced it will reduce import tariffs on 187 consumer products, including six U.S. dairy products, starting Dec. 1. They are categorized as varieties of grated and powdered cheeses, non-grated or powdered processed cheese, blue-veined cheese, other cheese, hydrolyzed protein formula and prepackaged infant foods. According to a report in Bloomberg, China’s Ministry of Finance released a statement on the reductions Friday, citing the need to help consumers access quality and specialty products that aren’t widely produced locally. China is one of the fastest growing dairy export markets and the third largest market for U.S. dairy products, valued at more than $386 million.

    Trump Administration Takes Action Against Aluminum Imports from China

    The Trump administration on Tuesday initiated anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations on imports of aluminum sheet from China. IDFA anticipates additional action on aluminum from the White House and continues to monitor the situation to assess the impact that these steps may have on the dairy industry. According to the Aluminum Association, the current investigations exclude the types of aluminum used to make cans, lids or tabs for the food and beverage industry.

    Dykes Discusses Farm Bill, Trade Issues with Michigan Dairy Farmers

    Michael Dykes, D.V.M., IDFA president and CEO, delivered opening remarks at the Michigan Milk Producers Association’s annual Leaders’ Conference last week, covering IDFA’s collaborative efforts to achieve positive gains for dairy in the new farm bill and U.S. trade policy. The conference in East Lansing, Michigan, brought together nearly 200 dairy farmer members of the cooperative, which joined IDFA in July as a member of the Milk Industry Foundation and the National Cheese Institute.

    OSHA Extends Compliance Date for Injury, Illness Reports

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) last week extended the deadline for requiring employers to report injury and illness data electronically through the Injury Tracking Application. The new deadline is Dec. 15. OSHA said the two-week delay will allow affected employers additional time to become familiar with the new electronic reporting system it launched this summer. The new deadline for complying with the final rule, “Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses,” applies to companies with 250 or more employees in industries covered by the recordkeeping regulation.

    IDFA welcomes two new members this week. Grassland Dairy Products, Inc., a fourth-generation processor of butter and milk powder, joined the Milk Industry Foundation. Shibuya Hoppmann Corporation, a packaging machinery manufacturer, joined IDFA as a Business Partner. The company provides packaging and bottling systems, parts and related services.

    NAFTA Renegotiation Objectives Updated

    The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) amended the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) negotiation objectives last Friday, following extensive discussion with Capitol Hill lawmakers and business leaders. The amended objectives include a call for the elimination of Canadian embargoes on U.S. dairy products.

    Urge President to Strengthen NAFTA, Food and Ag Groups Tell State Governments

    IDFA, along with 168 other food and agriculture groups, this week stressed to every state’s governors, agriculture commissioners and leaders of economic development that a withdrawal from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) would be detrimental to U.S. agriculture. “Over $1 billion a year in U.S. dairy products are shipped to Mexico,” the groups said. They added that if the United States, Mexico and Canada return to pre-NAFTA tariff rates, they could “range from 20 to 60 percent on cheese and up to 45 percent for skim milk powder."

    What’s Feeding the US Economy? Food and Ag Production, Study Shows

    More than one-fifth of the nation’s economy is linked, either directly or indirectly, to the food and agriculture sectors, according to a nationwide economic impact study commissioned by IDFA and 21 other trade associations. The study, released today, also shows that 28 percent of all American jobs are linked to food and agriculture. This data includes the $628.27 billion overall economic impact of dairy products produced and sold in the United States. The associations launched a new website,, that features the economic impact of the overall food and ag industry and links to interactive tools used by each of the associations.

    IDFA Leads Committee Meeting at World Dairy Summit

    IDFA staff members joined nearly 1,100 global dairy stakeholders from more than 50 countries in Belfast, Northern Ireland, last month to discuss dairy’s role in food security, food safety, nutrition, sustainability and the global economy at the International Dairy Federation’s (IDF) World Dairy Summit. IDFA participated in IDF committee meetings held in conjunction with the summit, where members discussed several relevant topics to the U.S. dairy industry. John Allan, IDFA vice president of regulatory affairs and international standards, was elected to chair the IDF Standing Committee on Standards of Identity and Labeling. Allan led the committee meeting where members discussed recent outcomes from the Codex Committee on Food Labeling, which included new work on voluntary front-of-package nutrition labeling.

    Congressman Glenn Thompson Visits IDFA

    IDFA welcomed Rep. Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-PA) to its office in Washington, D.C., last week, honoring his years of work as an advocate for dairy as a member of the House Agriculture Committee and his recent efforts to pass legislation that would allow more milk options in schools. IDFA’s legislative team and representatives from Dean Foods Company; Land O'Lakes, Inc.; and Maryland and Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative participated in the luncheon meeting.

    FDA Releases New Draft Guidance for Menu Labeling

    The Food and Drug Administration issued draft guidance last week on its menu labeling final rule, which requires restaurants and similar retail food establishments to display calorie content and nutrition information on menu items. IDFA members may be asked by foodservice customers to provide information to help calculate the calorie content for menu items and other nutrition information that may be required.
