When IDFA and its members speak, Capitol Hill listens. Through consistent advocacy on issues that are important to the industry, such as fair and equitable trade policies and agreements, members can make a difference on legislation that affects the industry. IDFA launched the Trade Toolkit to provide members with the information, messages, templates and graphics they need to talk trade with their legislators and amplify the dairy industry’s voice in Washington, D.C. This new resource distills complex trade information into concise language that can be used in talks with government officials.

“I am excited about this trade toolkit because it will help our members better advocate for trade policies that benefit the U.S. dairy industry,” said Beth Hughes, IDFA senior director of international affairs. “For every $1 billion worth of dairy exported, 20,000 American jobs are created. Last year, dairy companies exported products worth nearly $5.4 billion. Trade can continue to be a great benefit for our industry if we keep pushing for free trade agreements that promote the free export of products. With these tools, our advocacy efforts can further enhance dairy processors’ voices on Capitol Hill and remind members of Congress of trade’s value to dairy.”

The toolkit offers several one pagers referencing free trade, the international system, tariff information, and social media graphics. Resources also include sample advocacy letter templates to help members contact their representatives in Congress to advocate for their companies’ needs in the trade field.
