    Dairy Lab Course to Offer Pathogen Control Training

    IDFA is joining with Chestnut Labs again to offer “Microbiological Testing: A Hands-On Food Safety Course,” November 6-8 in Springfield, Missouri. “We developed this training exclusively for dairy industry professionals who need the tools to help build and maintain a strong food safety program in their plants,” said John Allan, IDFA vice president of regulatory affairs and international standards. “The course offers specific training on pathogens of concern to the dairy industry and teaches practical skills to help identify, test for and mitigate microorganisms in a dairy manufacturing environment.”

    Dairy Delivers®, IDFA’s Economic Impact Tool, Looks at Wyoming

    The dairy products industry in Wyoming employs more than 1,500 skilled individuals, generates more than $50 million in direct wages and has an overall economic impact of $192.7 million. The state’s dairy companies ranked 50th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia in contributions to the U.S. gross domestic product in 2017, according to IDFA’s economic impact tool, Dairy Delivers ®.

    Senate Passes Bill Funding Ice Cream Research and Dairy Business Innovation

    The United States Senate this week passed the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Agriculture Appropriations bill with critical research funding to find beneficial uses for ice cream co-product. Ice cream processors are one step closer to finding a solution to the problem of millions of pounds of ice cream co-product that must be disposed of every year due to a lack of technologies to recover its valuable components. The Senate also voted 83 to 15 to fund a new farm bill program that IDFA supported that would require the U.S. Department of Agriculture to establish at least three regional initiatives to provide technical assistance and grants to new and existing dairy businesses to help improve profitability and spur innovation.

    IDFA Convenes FDA, Dairy Leaders to Discuss Expanding Technology in Cheesemaking

    IDFA this week brought together leaders from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the dairy industry to discuss updates to regulations that would allow dairy companies to use expanded filtration technologies when making standardized cheeses. “Companies need regulations that allow them to use new technologies so they can remain competitive in a global market and meet consumer demands,” said Cary Frye, IDFA senior vice president of regulatory affairs. FDA officials agreed to consider the request to modify the types of filtered-milk products that are allowed as ingredients in the cheese standards of identity.

    NAFTA Must Protect Common Cheese Names, Address Tariffs

    IDFA, along with the National Milk Producers Federation and the U.S. Dairy Export Council, sent a letter Wednesday to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue, flagging two issues important to the U.S. dairy industry that it said still need attention and resolution in the modernized North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The groups urged the officials to call attention to geographical indications (GIs) issues and Canada’s high tariffs on U.S. dairy products. Negotiators from the United States and Mexico continue to meet this week in Washington, D.C., with the goal of reaching an agreement by August 15. Once a U.S. and Mexico agreement is reached, IDFA expects that Canada will be compelled to come to the table and a trilateral deal can be struck by the end of August.

    Congress Moves Farm Bill to Next Step: Conference Committee

    The House and Senate have agreed to commence conference negotiations on the 2018 Farm Bill to resolve the differences between their bills. This is the next step toward completing the bill before the current farm bill expires on September 30. The conferees represent members from the Senate and House agriculture committees, along with members from several other committees that claim jurisdiction over specific aspects of the bill. IDFA will be closely working with conferees to achieve favorable outcomes on each of the association’s priority issues.

    Secretary Perdue Calls for Preserving Common Cheese Names, Warns Against EU Demands

    Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue last week urged global agriculture leaders to resist the European Union’s (EU) demands to place restrictions on the use of common cheese names and other food products names, according to Agri-Pulse. Speaking at a G20 meeting in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Perdue stressed the importance of preserving common names such as asiago, gorgonzola and roquefort for all cheesemakers.

    FDA Kicks Off Effort to Update Standards and Dairy Labeling Terms; IDFA Testifies, Urging Action

    “The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking actions to facilitate food innovations that can give consumers more choices, enable better nutrition and improve labeling to reflect the healthy attributes of food,” Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, M.D., said today at the agency’s Multi-Year Nutrition Innovation Strategy Public Meeting in Washington, D.C. As the FDA reviews the more than 97 federal food standards of identity for dairy and other products, Cary Frye, IDFA senior vice president regulatory affairs, testified that an update is not only necessary but long overdue.

    IDFA Member Visit: Meijer

    IDFA traveled to Tripp City, Ohio last week to meet with Meijer executives and tour its cottage cheese, fluid milk and yogurt plant. Executives met with Mike Graham, senior vice president of supply chain and manufacturing, and Mark Sherman, vice president of manufacturing. The goal of the visit is part of a larger effort by Michael Dykes, D.V.M., IDFA president and CEO, to engage the association’s members at their operations and to learn how to best support them. This was one of several trips to member operations this summer made by IDFA executives.
