Acting Ag Secretary Delivers Frank Farm Bill Message at Dairy Forum
"We are not on a road to successful passage" of the new Farm Bill, Acting Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Connor told a capacity luncheon crowd at last week's Dairy Forum in La Quinta, Calif. While he noted that 90% of the items included in the U.S. House- and Senate-passed versions of the Farm Bill – such as conservation efforts, renewable energy, rural development and forward contracting – had broad support and agreement, Connor expressed the administration's concern that real reform is missing from the remaining 10%. Delivering a frank Farm Bill message, Connor said he and other senior advisors will recommend that President Bush veto the bill as it stands. "To get the job done, we simply need to bring courage and common sense to the bargaining table," he said. To read the acting secretary's remarks, click here.
