Ag Secretary Johanns Resigns; President Names Chuck Conner Acting Secretary

Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns resigned last Thursday amid speculation that he will enter the Senate race in Nebraska, where he previously served as governor before joining President Bush's cabinet in January 2005. The president quickly named Chuck Conner, deputy secretary of agriculture, to the position of acting secretary and may decide to nominate him to succeed Johanns.

Conner has been actively involved in crafting the 2007 Farm Bill and will continue to work with Congress as an advocate for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Farm Bill recommendations.

"I've had the good fortune to work with Chuck from the time he worked with Senator Richard Lugar (R-IN) on the Senate Agriculture Committee, to the Corn Refiners Association when we shared interests on sweetener issues, to the White House where he served as a presidential advisor on agriculture and now at the top of USDA," said Connie Tipton, IDFA President and CEO. "Chuck's background has prepared him well to serve the nation as acting secretary, and we look forward to continuing our strong relationship with him."
