House Agriculture Subcommittees to Begin Farm Bill Markups This Week

U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson (D-MN) and Ranking Member Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) announced last Thursday the committee's approach for the 2007 Farm Bill and said the subcommittees will begin to consider drafting legislative proposals this week. "Our goal is to develop a Farm Bill that has effective policies for supporting farm income, resource conservation, rural economic development, a healthy fruit and vegetable sector, feeding and nutrition programs, and energy independence," said Peterson. In related news, Rep. Steve King (R-IA), a member of the agriculture committee, expressed his support for permanent forward contracting for dairy farmers in a letter to Peterson and Leonard Boswell (D-IA), chairman of the Subcommittee on Livestock, Dairy and Poultry. This subcommittee will hold its session to markup agricultural titles for the Farm Bill on Thursday, May 24.
