Sugar Program Receives Slight Mention in Farm Bill Proposal
Although the 2007 Farm Bill proposal unveiled last week by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) included a slight revision to the current sugar program, IDFA is disappointed that the changes weren't more extensive. "We were hoping that the proposal would include more market reforms," said Clay Hough, IDFA senior vice president. According to the proposal, USDA would eliminate the provision that suspends marketing allotments, which dictate how much sugar an individual producer can sell, when sugar imports exceed 1.532 million short tons.
