IDFA to Create New Codex Committee
IDFA has decided to establish a Codex Committee to provide an opportunity for interested members to become more involved in the Codex standards process. An organizing conference call is scheduled for April 20 at 1:00 pm EDT. To be included on this call, please contact Brian Fields, bfields@idfa.org, or 202-220-3566.
The Codex Alimentarius Commission works under two United Nations organizations, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop food standards that can be adopted as law by any country. Codex also works on food labeling standards, food additive standards and food hygiene recommendations. All of this work by Codex has a significant impact on IDFA members that export dairy products since many Codex standards are enforced by importing countries and can be used to resolve World Trade Organization (WTO) disputes.
IDFA and its members have been involved in the work of Codex for many years through participation in the International Dairy Federation (IDF) in Brussels, which serves as the voice for the international dairy industry on Codex matters. Other avenues of participation have included membership in U.S. government delegations to the various Codex meetings, attendance at U.S. government Codex public meetings and submission of comments to influence U.S. government Codex positions.
