USDA to Hold Class I Definition Hearing on June 20

On April 11, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that it will hold a public hearing on June 20 in Pittsburgh, Pa., regarding proposed changes to the fluid milk product (Class I) definition in the Federal Milk Marketing Order system.

The catalyst for the hearing was an August 2003 petition from the Dairy Farmers of America (DFA) that sought to expand the Class I definition to include all milk and milk ingredients used in any beverage products, including new milk-based drinks. USDA previously called for public comments on this issue; 12 proposals on changing the Class I definition will be considered at the June 20 hearing. Members can review IDFA's summary of the proposals by clicking here.

IDFA will be working with its members in the coming weeks to prepare for this hearing. Members interested in participating in these discussions should contact IDFA Chief Economist Bob Yonkers at byonkers@idfa.org, 202/220-3511.
