Subject: Search Engine Optimization Tips

Syndicated from the Hydseo Yahoo group mail list.

The first step in any successful search engine optimization campaign
is to choose and incorporate the right keywords for your site. It can
make the difference in generating the greatest amount of targeted
traffic to your site or just getting more hits for related queries.

People who search on your keywords will find you if you are listed
higher in the returned list of sites on each search engine… simple
concept. But, single keywords alone don’t mean much, since research
shows that most search engine queries are a combination of key
phrases that people use to narrow down the most pertinent sites
returned for exactly what they’re looking for. People don’t search on
single keywords alone, unless they are looking for a name brand or
high profile site that’s well known through other avenues of
advertising and marketing.

Let’s say your site is about Siamese cat breeding and boarding. Just
targeting the keyword ‘cats’ is too broad and competitive to bring
you any real results from people who might contact you to make a
purchase. Your targeted market is people who want to buy (what?) or
board (where?) Siamese cats. You might brainstorm some key phrases
that will attract people who are in the market for your product and
services. Make a list of what your targeted visitor might type into a
search engine to find sites similar to yours:

-Siamese cat breeders (your competitive market)
-cat boarding (another competitive market)
-Siamese cat boarding Tuscaloosa (more specific-type of cat and
location is important for your products and services)
-registered chocolate point Siamese cats (very specific)
-show quality Siamese kittens (more specific targeted key phrase)

Now you have an idea of how to come up with some specific and general
keyword phrases in your site that will bring you the traffic that you
desire and key phrases that you can compete on by incorporating them
into your pages.

Take only one or two key phrases and re-write one page of your site
to include them. If you don’t already have a page that you can re-
write, create a new one and name it ’siamese_cat_breeders.htm’ or
whatever page extension you’re using, .php, .asp, .html, etc… Also
make the page title the same in your code Siamese cat<br /> breeders

In this page, put a heading on the first paragraph as ‘Siamese Cat
Breeders’ and make sure you use the same key phrase in your page text
at about three times for every 100 words. The top search engines are
looking for ‘content rich’ pages of 200-400 words. Put the page in
your site map and link to it from the menu in your other pages with a
descriptive link to your page using your key phrase ’siamese cat
breeders’. Follow the same pattern for your other key phrases either
re-writing or creating new optimized pages for them only using one or
two key phrases per page. You’re halfway there to getting more
targeted traffic now.

If your site is already indexed, the search bots will pick up your
new page and keywords on their next return visit. If your site is not
yet indexed, you would submit it after all your pages have been
optimized. Give the search engines a week or two and then monitor
your progress by going to each search engine and typing in your key
phrase to see if you come up in the top thirty results. Tweak your
pages if necessary to adjust your rankings for higher results.

Of course, tracking and monitoring multiple key phrases and tracking
your results in multiple search engines would be very time consuming.
This is where most people fail to rank higher, since they just don’t
have the time, resources and know-how to adjust their pages for the
optimal results, let alone track their progress. That’s where SEO
consultants
come in. They’ve already done the research and they have
the tools that can show you how to get the best possible results for
your site by making suggestions, giving tips and tracking reports to
help you optimize your site and get maximum results.

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
Search Engine Optimization brings more targeted traffic to your website which results in increased leads, sales, and revenue.

Search Engine Optimization or SEO, is the process of optimizing your website to achieve top placement in the organic search rankings for your website. ie. Search on Google for the term “Professional Web Design” and you will see that www.obuweb.com is listed among the top 10 websites on the left, or organic rankings.

(The listings on the very top and right are paid advertisements called Pay-Per-Click. We covered PPC in a previous mailer. http://www.obuweb.com/newsletter-archives/September-04.html)

There is a growing need for professional and ethical SEO services as the internet becomes more and more crowded with business and merchants showcasing their wares. Use yourself as an example, on any given day you may search google for a particular product, name, term, or business. Few users rarely scan beyond the top 5 listings, and less still scan beyond the first page of results. If you were seeking visitors for your website, where would you want your listing to appear?

Many companies are now offering SEO services as a stand alone service or in addition to web design services. Choose your SEO company carefully as some may offer promises that are impossible to fulfill. Top placement in the search engines does not come fast or easy, it is an ongoing process that adapts to the changes in the mathematical algorithms that the major search engines use to rank websites.

The major benefits of employing an SEO firm is by far; increased brand awareness and targeted visitor traffic to your website. The more interested eyeballs you can get your business in front, the more warm traffic you will get to your website, which ultimately leads to increased revenue for your business.

As an example we offer our own website. About halfway through July one of our in-house SEO campaigns came to fruition. obuweb.com is now ranked among the top 10 websites for “Professional Web Design” on Google, and MSN.

(For a few weeks we were also in the top 3 on Yahoo!, we have since slipped to #40 or so after an update to the Y! algorithm. Hence illustrating the point that SEO is an ongoing reactionary process)

In the few short weeks since we have achieved these top tier rankings for this very competitive term, our website has seen a 28% increase in visitor traffic, and over 90% increase in leads.

How would your business benefit from a sales increase such as this?

SEO is a lengthy, ongoing process. Results are not achieved overnight and take skill and commitment to maintain. ROI is a reality with Search Engine Optimization. The more targeted traffic your bring to your website, the more leads, and more sales your website will produce. It is a simple numbers game. Other factors such as visitor conversion % and demand can influence how well you website performs, once those visitors are there.

SEO is an investment, not an expense. You expense business cards and promotional mailers. Those methods may bring a smattering of customers. Can you hand out 1 million business cards a day? With a top ranked website, millions and millions of potential visitors per week may see your website listing. A significant portion of those will visit your website and take action. You make in investment in SEO to generate customers en masse.

Every dollar you spend building a website, is potentially a dollar wasted, if no one ever sees your website. An investment in quality SEO services is a proven way to achieve the high traffic location your business needs to thrive.

Subject: The Future of RSS is Not Blogs

The Future of RSS is Not Blogs
Copyright 2005 Sharon Housley

Blogs vaulted RSS into the limelight but are unlikely to be
the force that sustains RSS as a communication medium. The
biggest opportunities for RSS are not in the blogosphere
but as a corporate communication channel.

Even now, businesses that were initially reluctantly
evaluating RSS are beginning to realize the power and
benefit of the RSS information avenue. The inherent
capacity for consumers to select the content they wish to
receive will be the driving mechanism for keeping
advertisements to a minimum and content quality consistent.

Like the Internet when it first started, blogs were
emboldened by the “cool factor". As the novelty of being
new and cool wears off, Internet webmasters and bloggers
alike are realizing that maintaining a website or blog is
time-consuming. “Coolness” often wears off if a channel is
not monetized. With the ease of blogging and the array of
blogs available, only a handful will be able to sustain
fresh, constant, unique content and generate any sort of
reasonable or significant revenue. As a result, blogs as we
know them today will fade into the background, with many
blogs being abandoned.

RSS, being a tool that saves Internet surfers time and
allows webmasters to re-purpose and re-package existing and
new content will, in my opinion, continue to thrive. A
business effectively using RSS can bring new site visitors,
increase search engine positioning, and generate product
interest. The flexibility of RSS as a communication medium
and the expansion capabilities of the enclosure tag will
allow RSS to flourish as an online marketing tool. Each day
businesses are adopting new uses for RSS, and users are
becoming accustomed to skimming content that *they* choose
in a single centralized location.

As businesses adopt RSS and consumers experiment with
feeds, the popularity of RSS will grow. Ultimately,
consumers are the driving force behind technology. The
convenience of RSS and increased popularity will set a
precedent for consumer expectations. Businesses using RSS
as a communication vehicle are able to create keyword-rich,
themed content, establishing trust, reputation, and ongoing
communication with current and prospective customers.

The big consumer benefit to RSS is that consumers opt-in to
content of interest, totally controlling the flow of
information they receive. If the quality of the content in
the feed declines, users simply remove the feed from their
RSS reader and they will not receive any additional updates
from that source. The RSS reader acts as an aggregator,
allowing users to view and scan multiple content streams in
a timely fashion.

Consumer expectation will drive businesses that are slow to
adopt. Ultimately, RSS will be a standard, like email
addresses and websites are now a “must” for businesses. RSS
feeds will join their ranks.

Unlike blogs, businesses can easily justify RSS feeds, as
they will be increasing customer and corporate
communication. RSS will create new revenue channels. RSS
has the potential to help companies develop strong
relationships with consumers and create brand loyalty. RSS
Feeds will draw existing customers and prospective clients,
translating to a new or renewed income stream. Businesses
using RSS feeds as a communication medium to notify
interested customers of specials, discounts, product
announcements, technical support tips, news and industry
studies will ultimately sustain RSS as a viable and valued
communication medium.

Subject: Is Pay-Per-Click killing your online business?

By: Arizona Web Design @ 11:37 am
Filed under:

by: Joshua Strebel
7.05.05

With Pay-Per-Click costs on the rise (Google reported a first quarter net profit of $1.3 Billion) is your PPC campaign killing your business? Average PPC rates are around 50 cents per click with prime terms and position going for as much as $100.

Background: For those that may not be aware, Pay-Per-Click advertising is the process of purchasing ad space among the natural (organic) search results on the major search engines. Advertisers create text ads and bid on position for inclusion into the ‘Sponsored Results’ section of the organic search results for their chosen keyword. Each time a web surfer clicks on the Advertisers ad, they are charged a fee for that click. Fees range from as little as .05 cents or as high as $100 depending on the competition and desirability of the keyword.

Now, this is no guarantee that the visitor will actually do anything on your website, yet none the less you paid for that click. Also a recent class action lawsuit filed by Click Defense, a company which aims to monitor click fraud and gain refunds for clients, vs. Google, estimates click fraud (automated programs to repeatedly click on ads to drive up competitors costs) to be around 38%.

Quick Math: So if your PPC budget is $1000/month. And your average Cost-Per-Click (CPC) is $1.00 = 1000 visitors per month right? Well if we subtract suspected click fraud of 38% surely you now have 620 qualified visitors right? Well even the best websites only convert around 4.8%, and your average website converts at 2.4%. Your price point is $50 for your widget. 14.88 customers purchased your $50 widget for a grand total of $744. A loss of $256. And you do this month after month after month.

A Better way: Enter Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Search engine optimization is the process of: wait for it
optimizing your website to achieve top rankings on the search engines. Through detailed look at your marketing and sales goals, rankings competition analysis, and good old fashion hard work, quality SEO services will push your website to the top of the search engine rankings for your chosen keywords “fancy widgets”.

Rankings = Traffic = Sales = Revenue

Due to the hard work of your SEO firm, when someone searches for your keywords “fancy widget” your website is listed among the top 3 positions in the organic listings. 65% of web surfers click on the organic listings over the sponsored PPC listings. Ready for some more numbers?

There are 100,000 searches performed each month for the keyword “fancy widgets”. With your PPC campaign you get an average of 25,000 impressions on your ad before you reach your monthly budget of $1000 and your ad stops showing. You miss 75% of all searches. And at a loss of $256

More Quick Math: Meanwhile your organic listing ‘SEO’ among the top 3 results gets all 100,000 impressions. Of that 65% will click on organic results (see above) 65,000. Of that 65,000 you get 25% because you are among the top 3. That is 16,250 visitors to your website, you then convert 2.4% - 390 customers who bought your $50 widget = $19,500. Not a bad return. Now this is a “perfect world” scenario but I think you get the idea.

So what did the SEO cost you? Well a typical SEO firm will bill around $3k down payment to optimize your website, and a monthly retainer of around $1k for a period of 6 months to continually SEO your website and build your link popularity. SEO takes time and does not happen over night. If anyone tells you they can get you to #1 in less than 3 months they are lying, oh and if they even mentioned a #1 position, they are lying. As in life nothing is guaranteed. So your 6-month contract cost you $8,000. Simple ROI Chart below.

Month 1 Month 2 Month 3 Month 4 Month 5 Month 6 Total
PPC -$1,000 -$1,000 -$1,000 -$500 -$500 $0 -$4,000
SEO -$3,000 -$1,000 -$1,000 -$1,000 -$1,000 -$1,000 -$8,000
Gross Sales $744 $744 $744 $3,000 $8,000 $19,500 $32,732
Gross Profit -$3,256 -$1,256 -$1,256 $1,500 $6,500 $18,500 $20,732
Rough ROI 172.7%

Take this to Month 12 and your Gross Profit is $137,732 for an ROI of 1147%
*Perfect world Example, may not reflect actual results

In summary: Is your PPC campaign killing your business?. Well yes and no. Many PPC campaigns are very profitable for the advertisers. Some company’s rely on PPC exclusively and are doing very well. Even if this is the case they could further grow their bottom line by adding an SEO campaign. With top listings in the Sponsored and organic listings they will surely get a boost in traffic and sales. For the company in the example above, their demise is forth coming if they do not make a change and get the traffic their online business needs to survive and grow.
