    Congressional Dairy Fix Would Still Raise Milk Prices

    IDFA stated today that the legislation proposed by Congressional Agriculture Committee leaders would still cause a problem in the marketplace because it includes a controversial new program designed to limit the milk supply. That proposal, championed by Representative Collin Peterson (D-MN) yet resisted by consumer groups, food manufacturers and many dairy farmers, is known as the Dairy Security Act (DSA) and would require the government to intervene in milk markets to manipulate the supply of milk in order to keep milk prices artificially high.

    IDFA Urges Ag Secretary to Use Every Legal Authority Available to Avoid Raising Milk Prices

    The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) sent a letter to Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack today urging him to avoid or delay the impact of a 1949 law that could drastically raise milk prices. The letter outlined legal options available to the government to avoid this “dairy cliff,” which could impact the pocketbooks of millions of consumers and taxpayers.

    Americans Opposed to Government Limits on Milk Production

    <strong>(Washington D.C. – November 28, 2012)</strong> A new nationwide survey released today found that 81 percent of Americans agree that individual farmers should have the freedom to decide how much milk they produce and not have a limit set by government policy. The survey, which was conducted online last month among 2,094 adults by Harris Interactive on behalf of the International Dairy Foods Association, also found that 74 percent of Americans believe milk prices should be based on what consumers are willing to pay.  Only nine percent think milk prices should be set by government policy.
