Feeding America, which partners with IDFA and the Milk Processor Education Program in support of the Great American Milk Drive, has created a social media movement for September Hunger Action Month. Calling the month “Spoontember,” Feeding America is encouraging its followers on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to pose for and post selfies and then issue a challenge for others to do the same to create awareness of the one in six Americans struggling with hunger.

To participate, supporters are encouraged to take selfies while attempting to balance a spoon on their noses. According to Feeding America, the spoon is the utensil most often used to prepare and provide food for others. Supporters can then spread awareness about domestic hunger by posting their spoon selfies, along with a hunger statistic, to social media and challenging their friends and family to join in the effort.

Celebrity chef Mario Batali has already joined the movement, posting a spoon selfie on Facebook earlier in the month. On September 10, Mario Batali and Feeding America experts will host an online town hall meeting to urge Congress to pass a strong child nutrition bill by the September 30 deadline. Participants can join the town hall conversation at #HungerActionMonth ‪and #‎TownHall on Twitter.

The Great American Milk Drive

Feeding America is a partner of the Great American Milk Drive, which is helping families and communities and making an impact for the industry by delivering nutrient-rich milk across the country to Feeding America food banks. IDFA, MilkPEP and the National Dairy Council are jointly asking the attendees of the International Dairy Show to stand together in support of the Great American Milk Drive and reach the industry goal: one gallon donated for every attendee at this year’s show. You can donate online or by visiting the Cyber Café, booth 9131, at the International Dairy Show next week.
