Final regulations implementing the major provisions of the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), including new regulations for inspections, will be issued this coming August.  When compliance enforcement starts in the fall of 2016, companies will be required to conduct a comprehensive hazard analysis, establish risk-based preventive controls and verify their supplier’s preventive controls as part of the inspection process. 

“With these new requirements comes a new paradigm for FDA and state agency inspections,” said John Allan, IDFA vice president, regulatory and international affairs. “Dairy food manufacturers and their suppliers should expect, and already be planning for, drastic changes, for both Grade “A” and non-Grade “A” plant inspections.” 

To help members better understand the impact of FSMA implementation on plant inspections, IDFA is hosting a webinar, “Countdown to FSMA: Are You Ready?,” on June 23, 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. Eastern time. It will feature an interactive presentation by Elizabeth Fawell of Hogan Lovells US LLP, IDFA’s outside legal counsel. She will provide detailed analysis and guidance on what to expect next year when the final rules are published.
