Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack marked National School Breakfast Week this week by calling for increased participation in the School Breakfast Program to help improve the health and nutrition of children throughout the country. The Obama administration is asking Congress, as part of the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, to increase the reimbursement rate for school breakfasts and to allow the U.S. Department of Agriculture to supply the program with purchased commodity products. These actions likely would increase demand for milk and other dairy products as the breakfast program expands.
