Second Bill on Cloning Introduced in the Senate

Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) introduced a bill (S. 536) last Thursday amending the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 to prohibit the labeling of cloned livestock and products derived from cloned livestock as organic. The bill was referred to the Senate Agriculture Committee for consideration. To read the floor statement for the bill, click here. This is the second bill that has been introduced since the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released its draft Risk Assessment indicating that food from cloned animals is as safe as conventionally bred animals. The first bill, the Cloned Food Labeling Act (S. 414), was introduced last month by Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD). IDFA has prepared an analysis of this bill in a member Hotline titled, "S. 414, the 'Cloned Food Labeling Act,' and IDFA Messages." To read the analysis, members can click here.
