OSHA Offers Training Tool on Ammonia Refrigeration for Plant Workers
On July 15, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) launched an online tool to help companies and employees identify and manage safety concerns associated with ammonia refrigeration systems, which are widely used by dairy processors. The agency's tool consists of two initial sections: "Ammonia Receiving and Storage" and "Emergency Response". OSHA plans to expand the product to also cover the condenser area, piping and pressure vessels, refrigeration spaces and the machine room.
In the "Ammonia Receiving and Storage" section, OSHA explains how ammonia is transported, loaded and unloaded, and stored in vessels. The website points out possible hazards and controls at each step and outlines standard shutdown procedures. The "Emergency Response" portion contains detailed information on the importance of a written emergency action plan and how best to respond in a hazard situation involving ammonia. The site also includes general safety information, including a self-inspection checklist for plant managers.
In creating the ammonia refrigeration e-tool, OSHA worked with The Dow Chemical Company and the American Meat Institute. To view the new website, click here.
