VIII. New Directions for U.S. Dairy Policy: Thinking Outside the Box (Grand Harbor Salon V & VI)
Dairy policy has changed very little over the years; while the specific regulations have been altered, we still have programs dating back to the 1930's like the dairy price support program and federal milk marketing order program. More recent programs, like the dairy export incentive program and the milk income loss contract program, are similar to long used programs for other commodities. Meanwhile, the structure of the U.S. dairy industry and dairy markets have changed significantly. Is it time to completely rethink the structure of our dairy policies? Come hear this diverse group of agriculture policy experts discuss their "out of the box" thoughts on the future of U.S. dairy policy.

IX. Good Fat — Bad Fat: What in the Health is Going On? (Grand Harbor Salon VII&VIII)
Fat is being blamed for the obesity crisis that is skyrocketing health care costs due to increased heart disease and diabetes. But, what about dairy fats—some experts say stay away. New research suggests that even high fat dairy foods can fit into a weight loss diet. Milk fat contains CLA, a good fat that may prevent disease, and none of the dreaded trans fat. Dairy farmers are now increasing CLA in milk by feed management. If fat isn't the problem, then is it time to change our government message to focus on fewer calories or carbs? Experts on this science will square off on the pros and cons of dairy fat in the diet and what this means consumers and public health policy.
