Federal Nutrition Programs
Federal requirements guide food and beverages served under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) subsidized school meal programs.
Many states and individual school districts have school wellness policies that include nutritional standards for competitive foods (foods and beverages sold in schools, but not as part of the school lunch or school breakfast programs).
The National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program are both required to provide foods that are consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Since the 2005 Dietary Guidelines were a significant change from the 2000 Guidelines, a committee of USDA staff is working to update the nutritional requirements for school meals.
