Traceability
Traceability, or the ability of manufacturers to trace their product ingredients from the beginning of the supply chain to their final use, became a hot sidebar in the food safety debate this year. Even before the melamine scare and peanut recall, IDFA recognized the importance of knowing who your suppliers are and began an effort to better understand the complexities of traceability.
Working with members, IDFA recently experimented with a global food traceability concept at two member facilities. The results were extremely positive, encouraging opportunities for further development and testing, but the issues are complex and will require the development and use of new technologies and processes that are currently not available.
